THE next Bill Gates could be among these computer whizz kids who dressed up as their favourite game character in a themed day at their school.

St Theresa’s Catholic Primary School in Sutton Manor has embraced a new curriculum which teaches students more about how computer systems and eve - ryday programs are written.

Matthew Gaukroger has been teaching the children the intricacies of coding, or how computer software, including apps, is created.

He explained: “Since the new IT curriculum was introduced there has been a push to teach children how to program.”

On the day pupils also brought in pies to sell to raise money to buy low cost Raspberry Pi computers for the school. These allow children of all ages to write computer programs.

Matthew said: “The idea is to give the children the tools to use their imagination and go on from there. We want them to think bigger and give them aspirations.

“The children here have responded brilliantly. A group of Year 6 students who are the ‘code crushers’ helped plan and organise the event.”
