TWO men suffered hand injuries when a knife was allegedly wielded during a disturbance outside a town centre pub on Sunday afternoon.

Officers were called to The Royal Tavern on Westfield Street at 2.25pm on Sunday (December 21).
Police say a 33-year-old man was assaulted, leaving him with a small wound to his thumb.

Following enquiries in the area a 28-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding.

He was taken to hospital for an injury to his hand and is due to be interviewed by detectives.

An investigation is ongoing but as of yet police have yet to receive a formal complaint.

POLICE sealed off two areas on Westfield Street in St Helens town centre this afternoon as they launched an investigation.

A cordon was placed around the Royal Tavern pub and a pedestrianised area that leads between Burchalls pie shop and Westfield Street.

Police were stood preventing passers by walking through areas that had been sealed off.

People in the area suggested a man has been injured in an assault, though that is unconfirmed at this stage.

One bystander said: "They had been noting a pool of blood nearby steps to the pub."

Police have yet to comment on what happened at the scene.
