ELTON Head Road in St Helens has now re-opened after a gas leak this afternoon caused its closure.
 
A St Helens Council spokesperson said: "A suspected gas leak from a nearby industrial facility forced the closure of a section of the road between Marshalls Cross Road and St Helens Linkway."

SCHOOLCHILDREN have been asked to remain inside while work is underway to clean up a chemical leak at a warehouse distribution centre.

Emergency services are currently at the scene of the incident on Elton Head Road after they were called just after noon.

Workers have been evacuated from the site.

It is understood pupils at the Sutton Academy have been told to remain indoors until they have been given the all clear. However they are expected to be allowed home at normal time.

People living in nearby properties are advised to keep windows and doors closed as a precautionary measure.

Elton Head Road remains closed to traffic and pedestrians between St Helens Linkway and Marshalls Cross Road near Lea Green train station.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area.

Fire fighters were called to Elton Head Road at around 12.20pm this afternoon.

Police have put a cordon in place and the road remains closed to traffic and pedestrians between St Helens Linkway and Marshalls Cross Road near Lea Green station.

At this stage there are no reports of any injuries but motorists are advised to avoid the area.
