A MASKED man gestured to security guards that he had a handgun before attempting to snatch money during a delivery to a cash machine.

He was one of two thugs who targeted Co-op Late Shop on Parr Stocks Road at 4.25pm on Wednesday, December 10.

While the security van was outside, one of the men walked in and gestured to the guards as if he was holding a firearm although police do not believe he had any weapon.

He demanded cash but following a brief struggle with one of the guards both men ran off empty handed.

They were seen heading towards Evelyn Avenue where it is understood they got into a vehicle, possibly a white Ford Transit van, which officers believe was being driven by a third man.

No one was hurt and CCTV footage is being reviewed.

Detective Inspector Martin Earl from St Helens CID said: "People who try to steal from security guards delivering cash are taking a huge risk and my message would be not to bother.

"Forces across the North West, including Merseyside Police, routinely follow cash delivery vans and the cash boxes themselves have a host of security features including CCTV and dye that explodes if they are forced open.

"In this case, the offenders ran off empty handed and we are now carrying out extensive inquiries to trace and arrest those responsible.

"As part of those inquiries, we have issued CCTV images of a male who we believe may have important information which could help with our investigation. I would appeal to them or anyone who recognises them or what they are wearing, to get in touch with us as soon as possible."
