AMBITIOUS plans could see former collieries to the south of the town transformed into a major outdoor recreation destination.

The scheme would involve the development of several ‘recreation hubs’ on areas of woodland and agricultural land at Sutton Manor, Mersey Valley Golf and Country Club, Clock Face Country Park, Colliers Moss Common and Brickfields.

Proposed activities include Segway riding, dog sledding, mountain boarding, clay pigeon shooting, rafting, archery and a sculpture trail.

There would be a visitor centre and cafe at Sutton Manor, potentially boosting visitor numbers to the giant Dream sculpture, which critics argue has been left isolated by a lack of public facilities.

An equestrian centre, bringing riding lessons, pony trekking and show jumping to the area, is also being considered.

From November 27, residents can give their views on the proposals as St Helens Council begins a public consultation.

The council, together with partners including The Mersey Forest, have drawn up a boundary around the Bold Forest Park area, which straddles the M62 and is predominantly located in the Green Belt.

Planners say the scheme would make the most of the borough’s natural resources, boost leisure tourism, create more health-improving opportunities for residents and create hundreds of jobs.

Councillor Richard McCauley, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “The plan is fantastic, it will do so much for the area, not just economically but also in terms of liveability. It will be a much nicer place to live.

“Most people respond positively to the ideas and I hope people will take a look at the plan and give their input.”

The council and its partners’ vision for the park states: “By 2030 Bold Forest Park will be at the heart of a thriving diverse economy, providing a hub for family leisure and adventure sport. The natural environment will be rich and diverse. A network of open spaces and routes accessible for all connects the Forest Park to the wider countryside.”

Work on regenerating the area has already started with the Dream — on the summit of the former Sutton Manor Colliery — which opened in 2009.

Two studies have already been carried out by consultants URS, one which sought the views of the public and a second around the economic case. The first study found strong support, especially concerning potential jobs. It also found a desire to see the natural environment and local heritage protected and enhanced, as well as a desire for facilities like toilets, a cafe, tracks and trails, a public art trail and an adventure play area.

An action plan and supporting documents, along with information on how to comment, are available at the town hall, main libraries and can be viewed or downloaded at boldforestpark.com.

The consultation will run from November 27 until 5pm on January 16, 2015.
