PLANS to flatten the Hope and Anchor pub building have been withdrawn.

The building was facing the threat of being knocked down with the bulldozers set to move in after November 22 had the plans been granted.

However, the application which was submitted to St Helens Council by Corporate Assets, on behalf of Pilkingtons Glass, was withdrawn on Monday, the same day the Star published a story about the bid.

News that one of the town’s most traditional public house buildings, recently listed in the Good Beer Guide, was set for destruction was greeted by sadness within the town. Alan Healey, the St Helens CAMRA chairman referred to the plans as “very sad news” stating that “it also serves as a warning to everyone that we have to use our pubs in order to preserve them for future generations, remember use them or lose them.”

The Star contacted Corporate Assets in regards to the withdrawn application but they did not make a response in time of going to press.
