SPECIAL plans are being made to celebrate the town’s Victoria Cross war heroes by naming streets across the borough after them.

Councillor Seve Gomez-Aspron will put a motion before the council to ‘commemorate the service and sacrifice of those who fought and died in World War One’.

It is planned to name streets after Norman Harvey from Newton-le-Willows, Jack Molyneux from Sutton, John Thomas Davies and Frederick William Hall both from St Helens.

The streets will be close to where the four men lived.

Some of the Victoria Cross winners have no gravestone in their home town because they were killed overseas. This is seen as a fitting tribute to the sacrifice they made for their country.

The borough has proud military links and is home to a number of uniformed brigades, cadets and a unit from the Army Reservists.

The council will also be installing commemorative plaques to the VC winners at the war memorial in Newton-le-Willows and St Helens along special information boards detailing the history of each man.

Cllr Gomez said: “Our commitment to the Armed Forces Day Parade and Remembrance Services in our towns and villages show how the council wishes to recognise and support the sacrifice made by the residents of our borough.

“Just as significant are those who are currently serving in the armed forces and our gratitude goes out to them too. Future links are readily being forged through the Armed Forces Covenant and the recently opened Centurion Centre.”
