WOMEN who are looking to improve their health and expand their social circle are being invited to tee...

Teeing off, that's is, rather than a cuppa though. The new recruits are wanted by joining a ladies only golf group which meets every Saturday morning at Sherdley Park.

The park's golf club's ladies section currently boasts more than 30 members, but as not everyone plays every week, they are seeking more members.

Club captain Gill Roberts said: "We are a very friendly bunch but we've lost some of our members in recent years.

"There is no pressure - we simply enjoy meeting others and playing a round of golf."

Women of all ages and abilities are welcome to join, Gill said, adding: "When I started I could hardly swing a club, I hit more fresh air than balls. It's obviously about the golf, but there's more to it than that.

"As soon as I joined I had a lot of new friends, people from all walks of life."

Gill, 59, who lives off Elton Head Road and works as a manager at Whiston Hospital, is the club's captain until March next year.

She said: "After the golf, we go to the cafe and chat. Anyone who fancies it is very welcome to turn up and meet us there for coffee."

Club member Val Elerby, 70, has been playing for around 10 years.

She said: "It's great. We spend over four hours playing each Saturday morning, then have lunch afterwards.

"It keeps us young and fit. We get plenty of fresh air. During the year, we have competitions with other clubs, we have a golfing weekend away and and 'away day' to sample other courses."

The membership fee is £25 per year as well as fees payable for each game at the club.
