POLICE are looking for witnesses following an assault in which a man was punched in the face.

The victim was walking along St Helens Linkway with a friend at around 12.30am when a gang of six men and a woman walked towards them.

One of the group then punched him in the face before running off.

The 18-year-old victim later attended Whiston Hospital for treatment for a facial injury.

Detectives are studying CCTV from the area and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Detective Constable Mick Bowes said: "This was a senseless and unprovoked attack on a young man who had been walking along the road with a friend. Although it was late at night it is possible someone might have seen something. I would appeal to anyone with information to call the police as you could really help the investigation.
