FORMER council leader Marie Rimmer - the St Helens South and Whiston candidate for Labour at the 2015 General Election - is set to stand trial next March after pleading not guilty to assaulting a woman at a Glasgow polling station.

The 67-year-old West Park councillor was arrested as she campaigned with fellow St Helens councillors against Scottish independence in Glasgow in September.

Her case is due to be heard again before Glasgow Sherriff’s court in February although she is not required to attend this hearing.

A trial date is earmarked for next March.

The Labour Party has already said that they are monitoring the situation stating: “We’re looking at this closely and take it very seriously, but whilst there are ongoing legal proceedings we can’t comment any further.”
