A SUBSTANTIAL reward is being offered for information that leads to the conviction of arsonists who struck at an amateur rugby league club.

Speaking to the Star earlier this month Gary Swift, the defiant chairman of Blackbrook ARLFC, said the attack which caused an estimated £35,000 worth of damage will not hamper the club’s progression on or off the pitch.

The blaze, which destroyed a supporters’ shelter, was moments from spreading to the clubhouse.

This Saturday they will be holding a special fundraising event at their home on Boardmans Lane as plans get underway to rebuild the shelter.

Gary, father of Saints winger Adam Swift, said since the arson attack there has been a groundswell of community support: “People have been sickened by what happened. We have a good response and offers to donate new materials when it comes to rebuild it.

“We are devastated but it has brought people together.

“We even had a donation from Mecca Bingo in St Helens who raised £350. So it’s a massive thanks to places like that.”

Gary said he was confident that the arsonists would be caught and police are examining CCTV footage from nearby businesses.

“Police have a lot of footage so it is looking positive. I even had a call telling me they have images of someone walking past around the time of the fire.

“I am offering a reward leading to the successful conviction of those involved.”

The fundraiser will feature a band, as well as a number of bumper raffles for a signed Saints kits and balls, a signed shirt from former referee Steve Ganson and a rugby ball donated by former Warrington star Lee Briers.

Gary, 50, added: “Everyone is welcome and there is no admission. All we ask is that people throw in a couple of quid into the bucket.

“It’s ironic. This weekend was going to be the official opening with a bit of a do. Instead it’s a fundraiser.”
