THESE youngsters have got their hands on a copy of the best selling children’s book Diary of a Wimpy Kid which was handed out in a campaign to get more children reading.

The giveaway was at Chester Lane Library in Sutton Manor and is part of ITV’s Good Morning Britain’s ‘Just Read’ campaign which is being backed by St Helens Council.

Chester Lane was one of 200 libraries across the UK taking part in the giveaway which saw staff hand out 50 copies of the book by Jeff Kinney.

It follows a call from leading charities, teachers, parents and businesses to get all 11-year-olds reading well by 2025.

They published a report that revealed hundreds of thousands of children are leaving schools without adequate reading skills and one in seven children aged between eight and 11 do not own a book of their own at home.

There was also a number of special ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ activities last Saturday (September 13) with librarians reading out extracts.

Children who were invited to go to the library dressed as their favourite characters from the book designed their own front cover and made masks, badges and bookmarks.
