CHURCH Square was transformed on Saturday as a series of workshops were held to give people a glimpse of life during the First World War.

Everyday experiences of wartime Britain were re-created, with a range of activities available to mark the centenary of the war which transformed British society.

Children were offered a taste of life in a punitive wartime classroom, with lessons on ‘the three Rs’ and a dunce’s hat for slow learners.

Meanwhile, wartime entertainment was relived with Punch and Judy shows throughout the day.

Kitchen life was also on show, with ingredients for pilchard and potato pie and suet pudding with blackberries and apple being prepared to provide an authentic wartime kitchen experience.

Another stall saw small lead soldier toys created, which were enormously popular with wartime children. Having become affordable to the working classes just before the war, the toys became extremely popular.

Children were also able to experience the process of signing up for the armed forces with a recruiting sergeant.

Some First World War weaponry was also on show, with a regular army rifle, a Lee Enfield 303 and a Vickers machine gun on display.
