IT HAS been considered one of the town’s worst eyesores for over a decade but progress is finally being made at West Point.

These pictures, taken last night, show a steel structure being erected on the location.

The former St Thomas’ Square site has been the subject of one of the most drawn-out development sagas, with plans for a leisure and retail complex having been in the pipeline for over a decade.

After previous attempts floundered, hope was resurrected when Orbit Developments bought a section of the land from St Helens Council in 2013.

So far supermarket chain Aldi have been confirmed as part of the project with other leisure operators believed to be getting involved in the venture. Phase One of the construction is due for completion in January of next year.

I thought the major challenge for St. Helens was the provision of jobs and low-cost housing. When St. Thomas's Square, complete with shops and a thriving community centre, was demolished there was the opportunity to build a modern housing estate - instead we will have yet another supermarket, perhaps another gym, and more fast food outlets. This will result in another gym closing, and perhaps a supermarket as well. The opportunity to bring more people to live in the Town Centre and boost the existing leisure and retail facilities has been lost.
