CENTRAL Library is expecting another full house after confirming boy-girl indie band Big Deal will play a concert there.

The gig on Friday, September 19 is part of the award-winning Get it Loud in Libraries programme and the library is on the lookout for youngsters to get involved.

With appearances on BBC TV and on the pages of Elle and Vogue magazines, Big Deal have won fans since their debut album in 2011.

The library’s last Get it Loud gig two months ago saw pop-duo Thumpers pack out its floors – and Big Deal are expected to draw similar crowds with their catchy tunes and addictive choruses.

The scheme also offers exclusive creative opportunities for young people to get involved and develop their skills in film, photography and event management on the live shows.

It is looking for five lucky youngsters aged 13 to19 to take part.

They will have the opportunity to take part in a photography workshop prior to the event and will take pictures of the band.

Kathryn Boothroyd, community development manager at St Helens library, said: “I think it’s a great initiative, libraries are very diverse now.

“Someone who hasn’t been in the library for a while, I think they’d be surprised. It’s an opportunity for people to come in and think ‘I haven’t been here for ages, I really like it, I think I might come back.

“At the last performance we had a few of our regulars come along. We’ve had no negative feedback. I think people are getting used to the diversity in libraries now.

“Particularly, Central Library, we’ve had a book launch recently, a live ballet performance and now these gigs. People are just happy to see the libraries being used.

“One aspect that is interesting is that it is for all ages. At the Thumpers gig we had a seven-year-old from St Helens who had heard the band on the radio, really enjoyed them, found out they were performing in town and came along with their parents.

“We also had a group of teenage girls who really enjoyed it, they were really happy and grateful that they were allowed to come in, because they can’t go along to the usual over 18s gigs.”

Any young budding journalists interested in getting involved with the event should get in touch with Katherine Boothroyd on 01744 677486. Tickets for the show are on sale now at www.seetickets.com at £5 each and at Central Library, St Helens, doors open at 8pm.
