THE number of people going to St Helens Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) with debt problems has almost doubled in under a year.

There were 341 debt-related queries in the quarter April to June 2013 – this rose to 630 queries in the first quarter (January-March) of this year.

CAB chief officer, Karl Pearce, told the St Helens Star: “We have had many more people approaching us with financial problems over the past year.

“Debt-related problems have been rising since the recession and it’s getting worse, not better.

“This is not just credit card debt; the type of debt is changing.

“Pay day loans are a big issue, as are log book loans for cars. People seem to be becoming reliant on pay day lending, which will lead to them chasing their tails.

“These sorts of debts could impact families.

“Sadly we are referring more and more people to foodbanks.”
