ANDREW Kilmurray has been confirmed as the St Helens Star’s new editor.

The appointment completes a rise through the ranks for Andrew, 35, who joined the newspaper as a trainee reporter in February 2001.

The former Cowley pupil, whose previous roles include chief reporter and news editor, has held the reins of the Star in an acting capacity since December last year. He has played a pivotal role in driving the Star’s rapidly expanding website and other digital platforms.

Andrew said: “I’m immensely proud to be given the chance to lead my hometown paper and will do my utmost to ensure the Star’s reputation as the trusted and respected voice for the people of St Helens continues.

“I want to underline my absolute determination to ensure the Star rises to the modern demands of the media industry to meet the needs of our loyal readers and advertisers.

"I would also like to thank a number of experienced journalists I have worked under for their guidance and tutelage over the years and my colleagues for the support they have given me over the past 12 months."

Stephen Mather, another former Cowley pupil, has been promoted to chief reporter, and Paula Morris joins the Star from sister title the Warrington Guardian as a senior reporter.

Ex-De La Salle student and Liverpool University graduate Simon Mulligan has been appointed as a trainee reporter, while Mike Critchley continues as sports editor.
