ST HELENS COLLEGE has welcomed a government decision to introduce free school meals for disadvantaged pupils.
More than 100,000 students aged between 16 and 18 in England will benefit from September.
Free lunches are currently available throughout the country for those studying at a school sixth forms but now the Government has announced that this inconsistency will be ended by extending the scheme to for those in further education colleges from low income households.
Director of marketing and customer relations at St Helens College, Julia Callaghan, said: “It is fundamental that as a college we support, safeguard and ensure the well being of all of our students. The introduction of a free lunch at college for our students aged 16 to 18 from low income households is a welcome change following us petitioning as part of the ‘No Free Lunch?’ Campaign.”
All students at St Helens College are also entitled to a free breakfast as part of a move to boost concentration and student well being.
