MORE than 5,000 bargain hunters descended on a new town centre store, which has breathed life into a building that has been empty since 2012.
Creating 40 new jobs, Bargain Buys opened on the site of the former Comet store on King Street last weekend.
Around 200 people queued around the shop, as it was officially opened by the mayor and mayoress of St Helens.
The shop also donated stationery to pupils from neighbouring St Mary’s and St Thomas Primary School.
Store manager Yvonne Brown said: “We’re absolutely delighted with the response we have received from local shoppers, and this has been one of our busiest openings ever.
“We’d like to thank everyone who came out to support us, and it’s fantastic to be bringing a new lease of life into what was an empty unit.”
