TRAFFIC was brought to a standstill on the East Lancs after more thna 200 vehicles joined a procession for a traveller funeral at the crematorium.

People were warned to avoid Windle Island between 2pm and 3pm on Tuesday (July 22) following reports that a convoy of mourners would be attending the service.

The incident also provoked interest among Star readers online and via social media, with some explaining that they had been stuck in traffic longer than expected.

Readers reported seeing the police helicopter above and a large presence of officers on the ground.

A spokesman from Merseyside Police said: "Prior to the funeral procession that passed through the Rainford area, Merseyside Police was advised by the funeral directors that the procession would consist of about 50 vehicles. A contingency plan was developed on this basis in partnership with the local authority.

"When the funeral procession reached the Rainford by-pass it numbered in excess of 200 vehicles.

"The increase in the number of vehicles involved caused traffic congestion in the area and the force worked closely with the local authority to minimise the disruption caused to the local community and any motorists in the area with traffic updates provided."
