How come the travellers are allowed to spread floral tributes, flags, balloons etc all over the cemetery yet if anyone else happens to stray one inch over the 12 allowed in front of a grave, they get a note stuck to the headstone about breaking the rules?

Simple. Because everyone and his dog is frightened of them. That includes the police and all council officers. For example, you try building something that needs planning permission, without bothering to actually get planning permission. Result? Take that down. That, of course, doesn't count if you buy an old haulage yard in Greenbank, and turn it into a fortress. This is standard preferential treatment for our travelling brethren. Wonder what would happen if everyone decided to make their own rules?

This made the national press apparently a police helicopter was overhead and the local pubs were shut.

If true, then that is absolutely ridiculous! No way should other people be put out and be out of pocket as a result of somebody else's funeral!
