A COURAGEOUS cancer fighter was honoured at St Helens Town Hall as part of the Young Citizen Awards.

Kyle Edwards, from Haresfinch, was diagnosed with the Burkitts Lymphoma illness in the summer of 2011 and the disease was so severe that it left him unable to walk.

After suffering a fit, the Carr Mill pupil was left fighting for life in intensive care at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital before he was diagnosed with stage four of the disease, which is extremely rare in the UK.

However, brave Kyle defied the odds to walk again within months and in March 2012 was put in remission.

Now aged 11, he goes into Alder Hey for scans every 16 weeks to check on his condition.

Now to mark his battling spirit the school named him Young Citizen of the Year at the awards night.

In attendance were Kyle’s parents Carol, 46 and Stu, 51, older brother Luke, 17, his grandparents and school teacher Mr Maley.

Kyle, who will attend Cowley High School from next September, was presented the award by Mayor Cllr Geoff Pearl, with director of children and young people’s services Andy Dempsey also in attendance.

The award is organised by Allanson Street Primary School, which gives schools at the chance to nominate a pupil for a citizenship award.

“It was such a proud moment and he’s overcome such adversity,” said Kyle’s mum, Carol.

“He missed 12 months of school with his illness and he’s done so well to catch up and is even a year above where he should be in maths.

“His teachers have been absolutely brilliant with Kyle, as it was difficult adjusting after his illness and there were some trying times, but they helped him so much.

“I am very grateful, especially to those who chose for him to receive this award.

“He just wonders what all the bother is about and doesn’t understand why all the fuss is made.

“He is so brave and I can’t believe it, he’s my hero.”
