New benches stolen from Victoria Park

FOUR new benches that were installed in Victoria Park as part of a multi-million pound lottery funded facelift have been stolen.

Thieves cut through metal security fixtures and removed the wrought iron seats last Wednesday evening “The black benches are made of wrought iron with wooden slats. We would urge anyone with information about the theft to contact the police,” said a spokesman for St Helens Council.

Last month small metal flower holders were stolen from a grave in St Helens Cemetery, prompting the suggestion that metal thieves might on the prowl.

Without full time security I fear all the hard work and money spent on the park will be for nothing. Living close to the park I see a lot of people who have no respect for the area they live in.

Can this town have nothing? Ill be honest but with attitudes like 'well I told you if you put it there it will get vandalised or stolen' what a defeatist attitude to have !!! Can we not have a great rugby stadium, a great piece of art (dream), a beautiful cemetery, a war memorial, without the worry that someone will vandalise it. It's up to ourselves to be vigilant and ensure we report mindless acts of defication like this. When slomeine does something like this it's another nail in the coffin of funding from central government.

A couple of years ago I spotted a woman helping herself to daffodils in one of our parks. I decided to confront her as nobody else had it seemed. I told her politely that those flowers were for everyone to enjoy. She shouted back at me: 'Shut up, you weirdo!'. This from a woman in pyjama bottoms. For a moment I questioned if I or she was in the wrong. The truth is that a significant minority of the town would have sided with her. Very worrying.

This type of crime has boomed since the availability of cordless tools, they are so efficient they can cut through more or less anything in seconds, and have probaly been stolen from somebody's van or shed.
