THIS July’s Race for Life event at Haydock Park is on course to shatter its initial targets as an army of women are ready to make a stand against cancer.

The event, on Sunday, July 13, gives women the opportunity to complete a 5k or 10k run to raise money to help beat cancer.

And the number of participants for the 5k race has already toppled its initial target of 1,500 runners with more than 1,800 having signed up so far.

And about 50 per cent of the 10k target has been reached so far.

“I’m really pleased that we smashed our target and it just shows how popular the event is,” said Race for Life events manager Maria Montgomery.

In addition, an eye-catching pink New Generation Torque Converter truck will be unveiled, made by Warrington-based company Jungheinrich.

A team of 30 women workers from Jungheinrich will be among those taking on the 5k course.

Charlotte Bailey, Cancer Research UK’s North West marketing manager, added: “We’re calling on the women of St Helens to help us stop cancer in its tracks. Race for Life events are not competitive — they are not about being fit or fast but are an amazing way to celebrate life but also remember those who have been lost to the disease.”
