POLICE investigating a “cruel and spiteful” assault in which a 58-year-old man was struck on the back of the head have released CCTV images of two youths they want to trace.

The attack happened in Bridge Street in the town centre as the victim was walking past the Post Office.

He suffered a broken arm and had to undergo surgery in hospital.

The incident happened two months ago, on Saturday, April 19 but this is the first time police have made a public appeal for information.

The victim is still to make a full recovery.

St Helens Star:

Dou you recognise these two youths?

Detective Constable Chris Loughead, of St Helens CID, said: “This was a cruel and spiteful assault on a man who was walking home from town minding his own business.

"The victim's arm was broken as a result of the incident, leaving him needing an operation to fit a metal plate and screws. He spent five days in hospital, and nearly two months on, he still hasn't made a full recovery from what happened.”

The attack happened shortly after 8pm. It is believed the offenders cycled up behind the victim and hit him on the back of the head, causing him to fall over.

As he fell, his arm became trapped in some railings.

DC Loughead added: "We are now in a position to release CCTV images of two males who we believe may have vital information which could help us with our enquiries.

“I would appeal to the people shown in the pictures, or anyone who recognises them, to get in touch with us as soon as possible."

Two months to get a couple of cctv photos released?
Maybe the Police are too busy busting home gardeners rather than catching violent offenders?

why is cctv in st helens so poor on close ups, perhaps if it was more clear then these scumbags could be caught sooner rather than later.

seems to me they got the ones responsible, two youths on bikes 15 and 16 years of age, funny how the photo is of two youths 15 or 16 riding bikes and the police issued the photo,if it wasn't them why not issue a photo of those that did it and not a couple of random kids??? we probably would never know their names because the little cherubs are not old enough, old enough to do the crime but not to be named,12 months in a young offenders unit should sort them out.

It was NOT these two lads that attacked the DRUNKEN man. Just know that.
Why have you put the word drunken in capital letters? Are you implying that because he was drunk, he somehow deserved to be attacked and left with a broken arm? Just asking.

I just sincerely hope that suggesting the name one of the individuals (under 18) on a public forum doesn't prejudice any legal action that can be brought. That would be a tremendous misfortune if the case.

These names should surely have been censored. Why the heck has The Star allowed suspects/witnesses to be named, and especially children? Furthermore, the full facts will hopefully soon come out, and we will know if those pictured were involved, and if guilty of a crime or not.
