A REMEMBRANCE Meadow to help mark the centenary of the beginning of the First World War will be opened on Saturday, July 5 at Mesnes Park, Newton-le-Willows.

Dame Lorna Muirhead, Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside, will perform the ceremony which is one of the events staged to remember the many people who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The meadow project is a joint venture between Newton and Earlestown Community Group and St Helens Council to which the community is invited. Valley Brass Band will entertain from the bandstand from 11am and the opening ceremony will take place at 12pm.

The meadow has been partly funded by the Councillor Improvement Fund, which supports community projects.

Later next month Newton and Earlestown Community Group are promoting a night of music with The Hunters on Saturday, July 28 at Newton Social Club to raise money for the Newton Town Show on August 2.

Tickets, are £5 and available from The Coffee House in Earlestown, or customer services in the Wilkinsons store on Bridge Street.
