A RACE horse that is set to make its debut at Haydock Park looks destined for a glittering career if it can match the skill and courage shown by the rugby league legend who it is named after.

Two year-old Steve Prescott is tipped to follow in the successful footsteps of the late, great Saints, Hull FC and Wakefield legend who died last November.

Owned by Rainford multi-millionaire and Salford Red Devils RLFC chief Dr Marwan Koukash it will run its first race at Haydock on Saturday, June 21 at the Live Music at the Races meeting.

Dr Koukash said: “I am really honoured to be given the opportunity of naming one of my horses after the legend of rugby league, Steve Prescott.

"I am hoping this will help spread his legacy into the world of horse racing and help in promoting the Steve Prescott Foundation.

"I am also hoping this brings some happiness to Steve's family and in particular his wife and children.”

Today (Thursday) the horse that is highly rated by trainer Richard Fahey will be introduced to the Prescott Family, the Foundation committee and ambassadors at a pre-race canter at Haydock Park.

Dr Koukash has agreed to donate any prize money from the June 21 race to the Foundation and the race course has allowed the Foundation, supported by St Helens Angels, to hold a bucket collection on the day.

Foundation general manager Martin Blondel said: “This is a remarkable gesture from Dr Koukash. We are all looking forward to meeting the equine Steve Prescott. If the horse has 10 per cent of Steve's drive and determination it will be a winner.

“Marwan transcends sports and that is exactly what the Foundation is trying to do; spread the word of the great man and inspire those less fortunate to overcome adversity.

"This is a testament to how Steve touched everyone in Rugby League, I am sure the RL Community will get totally behind the horse."
