Church Square aim to entice 'well known store' to replace Burtons

Burtons will close on June 14

Burtons will close on June 14

First published in News

BOSSES at a town centre shopping centre are hopeful of enticing a “well known store” to fill the voids that will appear when Burtons and Dorothy Perkins stores close later this month.

Closure notices on the front of menswear store Burtons confirmed rumours surrounding the store, which occupies a prominent town centre location at the corner of Church Street and Bridge Street.

The Star’s report of the imminent axing of the stores – June 14 is the date advertised – led to dismay among readers concerned by the deterioration of St Helens town centre.

Earlier this year WH Smith became the latest national chain to leave, leaving a yawning gap on the high street.

A spokesman for Church Square Shopping Centre, which is landlord for the soon-to-be empty units, said: “The management team are hopeful of bringing in another company, and say that that well-known names are interested - helped by the presence of stores such as Romans, which opened in February, with six jobs.

“We have been informed by the store's (Burtons) parent company, Arcadia, that it has decided not to renew the lease, which ends in July.

"This is not a reflection of the situation at Church Square and we are aware that Arcadia is not renewing a number of its shop leases around the country.

"We are working hard to find new tenants for these premises."

Burtons and Dorothy Perkins will point customers to stores on the Ravenhead Retail Park from the middle of next month.

Well well well. Another one bites the dust .......... I won't hold my breath that a good, well known retailer will arrive in this desolate town. I find Warrington fabulous for shopping . Good car parks, at a very low cost, actually the same price as a St. Helens car park, if not cheaper and free on Sundays. Well worth the ride out.

Considering the recent previous track record of attracting well known stores (e.g the former Woolworths store on Church Street which was empty for so long before becoming a pound shop), I would suggest that the chances of one of the bigger high street names coming to St Helens in place of Burtons to be slim indeed.
That's unless Church Square Shopping consider a Pound Bakery Megastore or an even bigger Chinese buffet restaurant to be what they had in mind.

I think it is quite interesting that this story has noq quote at all from one of the towns Councillors or Barrie Grunewald who is usually keen to add something. Which makes me think it's all bluster and wont happen and they are going to distance themsevles from this story OR they are still unhappy with the Star for reporting about the drunk Councillor.

On a side note Barrie Grunewald tweeted yesterday that St Helens businesses should sign up to the latest Mary Portas TV Show.

This thread has made me laugh. Best way to deal with the depression that always follows a visit to Sintellins town centre is a laugh. Should knock the place down and start again. Alternatively, close all the shops on Duke Street and North Road and stick them into the growing empty spaces that can be found in Tiannamen Square; sorry, Church Square and surrounding buildings so as to at least fool people into thinking there is some life in the place other than drunks, druggies, yoofs on their skateboards and chuggers.

Funny how people are calling a councillor. I notice that yet again the dimwitted people of Sintellins voted back in the party that consistently fails to do anything about the town centre, or dog fouling or litter or indeed anything much except bleet on about bloody cuts. Couldn't make it up really.

The Labour group of St Helens in their manifesto proposed to develop a new town centre facility for young people. It appeared that they wanted to look at developing a new purpose built building for this. If they had any forethought and real vision they could use the Church Street Burtons/Dorothy Perkins store for this facility and save a fortune on the construction costs. Yes the building might not be perfect for this but internally it could be remodelled for such a purpose. Whats the odds on them not doing this? It would also be more cost effective and take far less time rather than taking years and years to sort this out and also save a small fortune on a new development.

Here we go, it's "airy fairy" time again. I wish they would stop insulting our intelligence with this talk of a "big name" store. As with everything else there is no stubstance , no detail just a lot of talk.

I am thinking of setting up my own consultancy business and I aim to call it "Pie In The Sky" I will sell my services to this illustrious Council and make such easy money coming up with a shedful of pipe dreams and a load of old blather. This way Barrie can fill the local paper with it all and keep his do or die voters happy whilst burying the bad news about his champagne swilling, uncouth colleagues.

Anyway, must go now. I have a £1 burning a whole in my pocket and I can't decide whether to go for 2 Custards from the Bakery or get some Washing Up Liquid from Poundland!
