A PRIMARY school’s indoor athletics squad kept up a proud track record of success by becoming Merseyside champions for a record breaking third time.

Legh Vale’s triumph came after four hours of competition at Kingsway Leisure Centre, in Widnes, against the county’s best junior athletes.

Assistant head teacher and team manager Mark Dickinson said: “As always, the standard in this tournament was unbelievable.

“To turn up and be able to compete with the best primary schools in Merseyside is one thing, but to go on and win it is something else.

“I’m really proud of our team and I don’t know if the squad realise how well they have done, as winning the Merseyside finals puts you right up there with the best in the UK, such is the quality of opposition.”

The Haydock youngsters were invited to the competition after winning the St Helens championships in November, when they claimed their sixth consecutive title.

Led by captains Holly Kennedy and Thomas Rigby, the pupils went head to head with the top teams from Liverpool, Sefton, Wirral, Halton and Knowsley with the day culminating in a slender, but deserved victory.
