The scene of the incident

First published in News

A LORRY containing around 6,000 chickens shed its load after colliding with a crash barrier on the M62 earlier this morning affecting all St Helens traffic heading into Manchester.

Drivers are being warned that the Manchester bound carriageway between junction 11 at Birchwood and junction 12 at Eccles Interchange with the M60 has been closed.

The tailbacks are reaching along the East Lancs and into Haydock.

The road is likely to remain closed throughout the morning while recovery workers are on the scene.

Most of the chickens were quickly put back on the lorry but dozens were running along the carriageway.

Commuters are being advised to take alternative routes including the southbound M6 and eastbound M56 from junction M62 at Croft Interchange.

I have just been stuck in this for over an hour!! ! In the end I had to abandon my plans and turn around!! !it was supposed to be my little boys first day at his new playgroup!! :-( I have explained to him that 6,000 chickens have stopped him from going to nursery, and that is the reason we will be going to. K. F. C for our lunch!! !

4 am in the morning so Motorway not exactly busy yet once again, we have the so called ' knights of the road " colliding with a stationary object, i.e. a barrier. The standard of lorry driving is, in my honestly held opinion, at an all time low. Just look at the number of m way closures for accidents where lorries have been involved in the early hours of the morning.

I heard these chickens were travelling back from Anfield where Liverpool FC had been counting them for the last 2 months.
