A LORRY containing around 6,000 chickens shed its load after colliding with a crash barrier on the M62 earlier this morning affecting all St Helens traffic heading into Manchester.

Drivers are being warned that the Manchester bound carriageway between junction 11 at Birchwood and junction 12 at Eccles Interchange with the M60 has been closed.

The tailbacks are reaching along the East Lancs and into Haydock.

The road is likely to remain closed throughout the morning while recovery workers are on the scene.

Most of the chickens were quickly put back on the lorry but dozens were running along the carriageway.

Commuters are being advised to take alternative routes including the southbound M6 and eastbound M56 from junction M62 at Croft Interchange.
