STUDENTS are tops when it comes to tiling.

Team work ruled as the St Helens College entrants proudly swept the board for the second year running at the Skillbuild Regional Tiling Competition, scooping four out of the top six prizes!

They faced competition from throughout the region to find the top tiling students to represent the North West at the next level.

In the main competition, Malcolm Worley, 18 from Sutton Leach was judged the winner, while Ray Wildman, 51, placed third and Paul Marsden, 48, was highly praised.

In the new entrants class eighteen year-old Callum Turner from Clock Face was runner-up second and David Robson, also 18, came third .

Head judge Dave Rowley, said: β€œI have been impressed with the excellent attitude and high standard of work shown by all the St Helens competitors.

Tiling tutor, Barry McDermott, said: β€œTo win last year was great but to win two years running is amazing. We have a mixed group with students of all ages, which contributes to our success as all of the learners encourage each other. The team spirit is exceptional. This was an incredibly long time to work under pressure and maintain concentration but our students were up to the task. After all of the effort that has been shown by the students they really deserve a place in the final.”
