IT is a landmark that has long been associated with spooky myths and legends, including that its inhabitants are a Scout eating dwarf and a giant rabbit.

Now three St Helens brothers have decided that the mysterious Crank Caverns, burrowed deep near the Moss Bank and Crank boundaries, would make the perfect setting for a horror film.

However, they need local businesses to help make that dream a reality.

Dean Baldwin, a 33-year-old writer and producer from Garswood, is tapping into the supernatural tales of the hidden cavities to produce a horror film called The Cavern Dwellers.

Their story sees young explorers unearth “ancient evils”, as they venture into the caves overnight.

Dean, who studied art and 3D design at St Helens College, is keen to make the film with brothers Craig, 28, a special effects artist, and Les, 43, an artist with experience in the film industry.

Dean said: “We want to create something exciting and positive that people will get behind and create a little buzz in the town.

“We researched stories and think that the legends and myths based around the Crank Caverns would be perfect for a horror film.

“If we find funding, we can offer enthusiasts and students invaluable experience in filmmaking. We will work hard and aim to take this film to festivals, so our little St Helens film will be seen around the world.”

Many of the cast will be from St Helens.

Some historians say the passageways were used by priests in times when mass was outlawed.
