A GRIEVING mother faces a daily battle to come terms with the reality that her beautiful daughter’s “life and potential” was ended by an extremely rare heart defect.

Shivohn Watson died, aged just 13, in March 2013 after collapsing at home.

An inquest into her death on Tuesday ruled that the former Haydock High pupil had an undetected heart problem.

Speaking after the hearing at Whiston Hospital, her mum Bev, 44, said: “There is a sense of relief but I’m still shocked that there was something we weren’t able to find out about.

“At the moment it feels fresh because you relive every minute. It seems very raw.

“The last couple of days I have coped but you have your bad times.

“One minute you are all right, then the next it can hit you hard.

“But I have to try and be positive because I get my inspiration from Shivohn.

“She wouldn’t want me to be too down and that gets me through the day.”

Bev was there when Shivohn was taken ill at home in Parr after complaining of feeling dizzy and in pain.

Paramedics were called and she suffered a heart attack in the ambulance before dying in hospital.

The inquest heard that Shivohn’s heart defect was extremely rare and was present from birth.

It would have taken many months of numerous tests to determine whether Shivohn had the defect, even if it had been detected at an early stage.

It was so rare that it was only 30 years ago that the condition was discovered.

But until she collapsed, she had no recognised medical problems.

Bev added: “She would have been 15 this year and it gets to me because when I last saw her she was 13.

“You can’t help but feel how she would have grown up and what would she have achieved. It’s going to be a constant battle.

“If someone dies when they are older, then you can see what they have achieved, whether it’s through their school or job.

“Shivohn loved kids, so would she have gone into childcare.

“There will always be that question of what would she have become.”
