A police statement read: "Merseyside Police can confirm a containment was placed around a property in Haydock this morning (Friday, 18 April) following a concern for safety call.
"At about 10.40am emergency services were called to a report of a man carrying an axe and, what was thought to be, a handgun acting erratically outside of a property on Clipsley Lane.
"When patrols attended the man had already returned inside the property.
"As a precautionary measure a cordon was put in place around the property whilst the officers attempted to engage with the man.
An air weapon was found inside the property.
The cordon has been removed and the suspect is in police custody.
The incident led to tailbacks in Haydock as rugby league fans headed to the Saints versus Wigan Good Friday derby.
