MOTORISTS will be able to use their mobile phones to pay for parking in St Helens town centre under a new “cashless” system.

St Helens Council has unveiled plans for the scheme which it says will provide motorists with a “more convenient way” to pay at car parks and street locations.

Motorists will be given text confirmation that parking has been booked and a reminder text when a session is due to expire.

They will also be able to extend parking via phone, SMS or Smartphone application.

In a statement, Bob McAllister, parking services manager for St Helens Council, said. “Cashless parking is a much more flexible system which will provide quick, easy and a safe way for motorists to pay for parking sessions via their mobile phone.

“This new facility is in addition to the existing pay and display machines which will remain.

“We also hope it will encourage motorists to stay and shop for longer.”

A date for the system’s launch is yet to be announced, though the council says it is imminent.

To use the new service motorists can pre-register their vehicles online at www.phoneandpay.co.uk and download the app by searching for ‘Phone and Pay’ parking.
