St Helens Star: Green space team ready to spring into action Green space team ready to spring into action

AN enthusiastic task team dedicated to maintaining open spaces has been boosted by 14 seasonal recruits.

Helena Partnerships Green Space service aims to make a real difference boroughwide this summer and among the new team members are Helena tenants.

Launched in 2010, the team prunes plant beds and clears hard surfaces, maintains trees and shrubs, maintains communal grass areas, removes litter and trims greenery.

Rich Barley, Green Space operations manager, explained: “It is always a pleasure to welcome new members to our team but even more so when a number of these have previously been unemployed and are Helena tenants.

“Four of the new recruits came from St Helens Chamber, further strengthening our continuing relationship with them.

”The enthusiasm shown for these roles has been excellent, and although these positions are seasonal there is a good chance full time roles will become available as we further invest in the neighbourhood services we provide throughout this coming year.”

New starter Andrew Prior was taken on after gaining practical experience through the Helena Partnerships Green Base volunteer programme.

He is now completing his NVQ Level 2 in horticulture at St Helens College on day release and putting theoretical knowledge into practice with the Green Space team.

Andrew said: “It’s been really good coming to Helena, I’m enjoying everything so far, especially improving people’s gardens. I am now hoping to get a permanent position at the end of the season.”
