LEAVE your cars at home is the message to racegoers heading for the Grand National.

Public transport is the best bet for getting to the Aintree event which begins on Thursday and culminates in the world famous steeplechase on Saturday afternoon.

During the three day festival 150,000 people are expected to descend on the racecourse and to ease road congestion transport providers Arriva and Stagecoach will run special regular bus services numbered 922 between Elliot Street in Liverpool city centre and Aintree racecourse, and from the racecourse back to the city centre after the races.

Other regular bus services run from both the city centre and other parts of Liverpool and stop near the racecourse.

Some roads in the Aintree area will be closed throughout the three days and as a result, some bus services will be diverted. On Merseyrail extra trains are being provided to increase the frequency of services.
