A FRENCH bulldog proved she really was ‘top dog’ when she walked away with one of the prizes at Crufts.

Five-year-old Penny is owned and trained by experienced Rainford breeder Ann Wildman, and both beat off stiff competition at the world’s biggest dog show to claim the Best of Breed award.

Penny was one of more than 21,000 dogs at the NEC in Birmingham, which attracted competitors from 45 countries over four days.

Ann, 50, was left beaming with pride at Penny’s perfect performance.

She said: “It’s what all of 40 odd years of showing has built up to because it’s the ultimate accolade to pick up.

“This was my first Best of Breed with the French Bulldog so it was a very special occasion for me. The whole experience has been wonderful.

“All the foreigners come over for this show, so you have the crème de la crème of dogs from all over the world, and my Penny is the best one out of the French Bulldogs.
