A TEAM of workmen were called into action after a car burst into flames after flipping onto its roof.

The crew were carrying out road works near Rainhill Stoops when there was a two car collision near the M62 just after 1.50pm.

Two men believed to be in their 20s had climbed out of an upturned black Volvo which was on fire. The workmen managed to put out the fire before the emergency services arrived. 

A 58-year-old man who was in a silver Honda suffered a suspected chest injury.

All three were checked by paramedics and taken to Whiston Hospital.

Two fire engines were called out and were at the scene for around 50 minutes.
