TRIBUTES have poured in from across St Helens to former Labour politician Tony Benn who has died aged 88.

The veteran politician - a hero to those on the left of the Labour Party - polarised opinion across the political spectrum but drew admirers from all walks of life for the way in which he steadfastly stuck to his beliefs.

He made visits to St Helens in the early part of his political career.

Johnny Vegas was quick to Tweet his admiration.

He posted: “So deeply saddened at the news of Tony Benn's passing. A true socialist & a politician who's only vested interest was other people's welfare.”

He added: “RIP Tony Benn. A man who chose to live by his principles, not merely preach them. Politics, indeed life, has lost a true moral champion.”

Former council leader Marie Rimmer, who is seeking the nomination to replace Shaun Woodward as the candidate for St Helens South, commented: “Sad news of #TonyBenn he was full of integrity, principles & inspiration & believed a world of peace & justice was possible #RIPTonyBenn.”

Windle councillor David Baines Tweeted: “Incredibly sad to hear of the passing of Tony Benn. A colossus in the Labour movement & fighter for a fairer world."

The present ragbag of senior Labour politicians are not fit to walk in Benn's shadow - he never wavered from his principles, despite the cost to his political career. A giant surrounded by pygmies. Miliband's comment that he was a "conviction politician" is truly ironic, for that is exactly what Miliband and his cronies have never been and never will be.

How did he live by his principles? He preached the Communist line but never shared his wealth with anyone!

How do you know what he did or didn't share? The bible says "never let your left hand know what your right hand's doing", meaning, if you're giving to others, don't shout from the rooftops "look at what a good person I am". I doubt if Tony Benn was the type of person to do just that, so we don't know and never will. R.I.P. to someone who I consider a true man of the people.
