MOST people know the Manchester Ship Canal was built to allow ocean going vessels to reach inland docks at Manchester.

Less well know are details of the Ship Canal Company’s own railway system that ran alongside the waterway from Runcorn to Manchester, but all will be revealed when Dr Michael Bailey addresses the next meeting of the Locomotive Club if Great Britain.

The presentation starts at 7.30pm on March 20 in the meeting room at the Pied Bull Hotel, High Street, Newton-le-Willows. Admission is free but £2 donations would be appreciated.

Monthly meetings of the Club’s North West branch are held throughout winter and spring months. More details from lcgb.nw@blueyonder.co.uk or 01925 226473.
