THE rows of blackened twisted metal lying across the floor is all that remains of the roof of a former social club after it came crashing down as the inferno took hold.

Star contributor Robbob took theses dramatic shots two days after the fire at the old Labour Club, parts of which were still smouldering.

The photographs show the extent of the damage to the building on Chancery Lane following the suspected arson attack on Thursday (February 27).

Inside the walls are coated with thick ash and windows have been burned out. One of the pictures shows a charred filing cabinet against a wall and furniture scattered across the room.

At its height the thick plume of smoke rising above the building could be seen across St Helens and Chancery Lane was closed for several hours.

An investigation has been launched into the exact cause of the fire.
