St Helens Star: Motorway lights switch-off trial Motorway lights switch-off trial

A COUNCIL is switching off the road lights along a stretch of the M62 motorway as part of a 12-month trial.

The M62 in Knowsley will have no street lights between junctions 5 and 6 of the motorway from Friday, March 8.

However, slip roads onto and off the motorway will remain lit, as will the gantry signage.

Renewed road markings, reflective studs, and improved reflective traffic signs have been installed ahead of the start of the trial.

A Knowsley Council spokesperson said: “The impact of the trial will be assessed through analysis of energy efficiencies, financial savings, and survey data over the 12 months.

“Any feedback from residents and road users will also be taken into consideration.”

Another Labour controlled council that thinks that by pulling stunts like this, it will be able to fan the flames of a class war by blaming the nasty coalition for cutting it's funds and forcing it's hand. Of course, like St Helens, it has millions tucked away for a rainy day but refuses to declare what rainy day this is.
