FIREFIGHTERS are currently at the scene of a fire at a former social club in Parr.

Crews were called on Chancery Lane at around 4pm to the empty building.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said that the fire started in the back of the property but it is not known the cause of the blaze at this time.

Chancery Lane is closed both ways and is due to remain so for several hours while firefighters tackle the blaze.

A spokesman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters have been called out to a fire at an empty building in St Helens.

"Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service is in attendance at a fire at a former social club on Chancery Lane.

"Four fire appliances were initially called out from St Helens, Eccleston, Whiston and Kirby community fire stations just after 4pm.

"A fire was located in the rear of the property.

"Three fire appliances are still in attendance at the scene."

News just in - Council announces plans to use ground the pub was on to build a skate park (with courtesy bus from Church Square), a state of the art playground with waterproof Imac's and a family centre where people can get advice on what othr benefits they can claim whilst sat idle dodging work.
Because after all, these are the type of areas that deserve all the best facilities.

What use was it anyway? It's been closed for years. The acts that worked there used to tell me it was a graveyard for comics. It's a relic from the 60s and 70s that should have been got rid of years ago. A purpose built community centre is the way forward for the site.
