FIREFIGHTERS are currently at the scene of a fire at a former social club in Parr.

Crews were called on Chancery Lane at around 4pm to the empty building.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said that the fire started in the back of the property but it is not known the cause of the blaze at this time.

Chancery Lane is closed both ways and is due to remain so for several hours while firefighters tackle the blaze.

A spokesman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters have been called out to a fire at an empty building in St Helens.

"Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service is in attendance at a fire at a former social club on Chancery Lane.

"Four fire appliances were initially called out from St Helens, Eccleston, Whiston and Kirby community fire stations just after 4pm.

"A fire was located in the rear of the property.

"Three fire appliances are still in attendance at the scene."
