EAMONN McManus described Steve Prescott as the most remarkable person he has ever known as Saints and St Helens Council united to rename the bridge.

Speaking to the crowds gathered beside the footbridge, the Saints chairman said that the “unique person” that was Steve will never be forgotten by the people of this town.

He said it was a fitting tribute as “it connects the hometown of the favourite son of St Helens to the great rugby league club that he represented with such pride and distinction”.

McManus added: “It is a clear and permanent reminder of his life and his achievements and more importantly of the person that he will be lovingly remembered for.

“Steve is often described as courageous, inspirational and selfless, he was actually more. To me he was the most extraordinary and exceptional person that I have ever known or will ever know.

“I find it difficult to believe this country let alone this proud town of St Helens has in this generation produced person whose actions and deeds in the face of such continuing illness and pain have been devoted entirely to the befit of others and for such great good.

“His legacy is powerful – the Steve Prescott Foundation will endure to further Steve’s benevolence for years to come.

“He shared his spirit and vision closely with his wife Linzi and his two young sons – surely they are his most powerful and enduring legacy.”

Barrie Grunewald, the St Helens Council leader, said Steve was “a first class ambassador for the town he was so proud of”.

He said: “Naming the bridge after him is our tribute to one of the greats of St Helens – a most deserved honour.

“The reception he received at various fundraisers for his foundation confirmed his status as the people’s champion.”
