ST HELENS College played a major role in preparing five students for a role in the British Armed Forces.

They completed a Level 3 Diploma in Public Services to hone their skills for service roles such as armed forces, police or fire services.

The one-year programme of outdoor activities and adventures increased their fitness and boosted their knowledge of war, terrorism and conflict. Course tutor and former soldier, Grant Williams, provided the students with advice, guidance and support throughout the programme.

On completion of the course RAF airman Edsel Igot, aged 20, Royal Marine recruit Lewis Kernot, 19, soldier Lee Ryan, 22, combat medic Jessica Torn and Army Air Corps soldier Charlotte Duckworth, both 20, were all recruited.

Combat Medic and former Upholland High School Jessica said: “I have always wanted to join the army as my Uncle, Dad and Grandad have all served in the forces and inspired me to follow in their footsteps. The course helped me prepare for the army and built up my fitness.”

Former Haydock High pupil Charlotte said: “The course helped me determine what sector of public services I wished to pursue a career in. I believe the programme helped me secure a place in the British Army and made me fitter and mentally more prepared than other recruits.”

Ex-St Edmund Arrowsmith pupil Lewis said: “St Helens College was the perfect stepping stone to fulfil my dream of becoming a Royal Marine Commando. Enrolling onto the course was the best thing I have ever done.” For course information call 0800 99 66 99 or visit www.sthelens.ac.uk..
