POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a cyclist was found lying injured at the side of the road early this morning.

The man, whose age is not currently known, was discovered by a passing motorist at around 6.40am on Warrington Road in Bold Heath.

It is not known how long he had been there but officers believe that he may have been involved in a collision with a vehicle some time around 6.30am, which then failed to stop.

He is currently being assessed at Aintree University Hospital where he is being treated for a serious head injury.

Police are appealing for any motorist who was in the Bold Heath and Warrington area at around that time to contact them on 0151 777 5747.

Warrington Road has been closed between its junctions with Clock Face Road and Sandy Lane and motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible.
