INFIGHTING of a non-political kind is set to kick-off in St Helens Town Hall and there’s a rush for ringside seats!

Infinite Promotions, headed by Sutton Leach promoter Ciarán McConnell and business partner Jack Rae, from Maghull, are bringing wrestling to the town’s Assembly Room.

“Our business in Liverpool has been fantastic since we started in May 2012. It has been my goal to bring quality wrestling to St. Helens,” said 22 year-old Ciarán, himself, like Jack, a ring regular.

“The talent of the lads that appear for us has to be seen to be believed. We have 24 stone men flying through the air one minute, yet they are technical wizards the next.

“Liverpool’s had the chance to see them and now it’s a great thrill to be bringing it home.”

The former St. Cuthberts’ Catholic Community College student attended Carmel College and Bangor University. While still at Bangor, Infinite Promotions was formed and entertains hundreds of fans in Liverpool each show.

Ciarán is intrigued by the history of wrestling in the UK and is a fan of the old school.

“Wrestling was a hugely popular form of entertainment for many years in Britain. One bout on FA Cup final day 1963 between Mick McManus and Jackie Pallo was watched by a 20 million television viewers,” he told the Star.

“St Helens featured in that history. Research tells me that it was hugely popular at the old Boundary Road Baths. Now wrestling is perceived as an American product, thanks to the global success of WWE in the United States. Infinite Promotions, though, is proof that there is still a huge raft of talent domestically.”

His love of wrestling – which TV’s World of Sport took off the air in 1988 – has led him to talking to a lot of the game’s ‘old boys’ including his mentor ‘Gipsy’ John Kenny who used to run The Glassblower pub in Boundary Road.

“We had a crowd of 650 at our Liverpool show at the end of January. It’s growing in popularity and we’re hopeful wrestling will become a regular feature in St Helens,” said Ciarán.

The Town Hall show begins at 7pm (doors open 6pm) on Friday, February 21. It will be a two and a half hour, six bout event. Infinite heavyweight champion CJ Banks from Southport will be hoping to keep the title he he has held for almost two years even though his opponent, tattooed traveller T Bone, is over three stones heavier than he is.

Others on the bill are 18 stone Yorkshireman “Rampage” Brown (ex WWE), lightweight “Mexican Sensation” El Ligero, mums’ and dads’ favourite ”Bubblegum”, plus a tag team.

Tickets are £10 at the door or visit www.infinitepromotions.co.uk
